Chakra Series, Part Five: Throat Chakra

The Throat Chakra governs clear communication/being heard, success & issues of control/being controlled. It also relates to freedom & the ability to accept change & abundance. (If you missed the earlier articles in this series, have a look at the Chakra Series - Part One to catch up...) Learning a little about them can really help us to understand  and heal ourselves.

The Throat Chakra:

Position: Throat
Associated Organs/Areas: Lungs, Throat, Neck, Lymph Glands, Mouth
Endocrine Gland: Thyroid

The throat chakra is a powerful area because it governs three powerful aspects and needs in our lives: Change, Communication and Control.

It is the centre where we express ourselves, our feelings, needs, ideas and general opinions. The throat chakra is connected with the sacral chakra because it's the final stage of creation, to express, to release and to let go. The throat chakra is where we hold everything in, where we wait until we feel ready, able or allowed, to express ourselves. We control our expression here and it is where we allow others to control us and our lives too.

Change is the only constant thing in life and yet we can struggle with it. The lower self/ego hates change and being out of control, it fears change. Yet change is growth, freedom and expansion. Change is improvement, space and stimulation. It is the very air we need to exist fully.

The throat is where we decide whether to speak up or keep quiet, swallow the feelings down or express them. Let go or hold on. The emotions stored in the body cannot be released until we let them out, through the throat chakra. Imbalances in the sacral chakra are linked with the controlling and non-releasing at the throat chakra. If we feel it's unacceptable to speak up, be ourselves, change or create, we will block it at the throat and this blocks us all the way down to the sacral chakra, the creative centre, where the process begins.

It's so important to be able to express ourselves and yet, it can be so hard to do. Upbringing plays a big part in expressing oneself, often, children are to be seen and not heard, or the other extreme, had to shout to be heard in a large, busy family. Many people fear being honest, talking openly about their feelings, desires and ideas. We worry about hurting others' feelings or causing a scene. Sometimes we are confident expressing in certain areas of our lives but in others, cannot find the words. Healing helps us to find loving ways to express ourselves, even the most difficult things can be expressed lovingly, once the backlog of emotion has been released safely and appropriately.

Most of us have some kind of control issues in life, whether big or small and we must learn to trust that we are taken care of by life in every way, which, in turn, gives us the freedom to focus on creating the lives we want - free of controlling agendas. We learn that we can only control our own lives through learning to manifest the things we desire, by focusing on what we want not what we don't want. We learn that we can't control others and that, when we try, it only leads to disappointment and guilt. We must also stop controlling our emotions to the point of suppression and learn to express and accept ourselves more completely as human beings.

Problems occur in the throat chakra area when we bottle up emotions or words that need to be said, when we deny our creativity an outlet. Also, when we feel we don't deserve to succeed. If we feel others are trying to control us, or we feel restricted in life. Sometimes people complain about feeling blocked or even like they're being strangled, or experiencing a sore throat that won't go away.  A stiff neck is often reflecting a stiff way of dealing with something, refusing to be flexible and change. The need to firstly communicate with themselves is the key and to give permission to express whatever needs to be expressed is the path to health.

Tips to balance the Throat Chakra:

Spend time alone and listen to how your feeling; the first step to communicating clearly to others is to first hear yourself clearly

Give yourself permission to speak up. If you're too emotional, spend time releasing it before speaking in order to communicate from a place of love and clarity

Accept that the only thing you can control is you and that you can create whatever you want in life. Reclaim your power by realising this

Allow yourself to change and grow. It's safe to be successful!

Write a 'no holds barred' letter and then burn it to express difficult emotions and things you just can't say

Get creative just for fun!

Know that it's ok to let your feelings out, it's healthy and it clears the way for the new

I hope you find this post helpful, it really can be useful to understand ourselves better and those around us too of course!
